Wallpapering a ceiling might seem like a challenge, but with the right preparation and technique, it’s absolutely doable—and the result can completely transform a room! For the best results, we recommend working with two people.

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

• Make sure the ceiling is clean, dry, smooth, and sound.
• Remove any loose or flaking paint and old or loose wallpaper.
• If the ceiling has been treated with lime or mineral paint, this must be removed before wallpapering.
• Fill any holes, cracks, or dents, then sand the surface smooth.
• If the existing ceiling is very dark or patterned, remove the existing wallpaper or use a suitable primer or lining paper to create a uniform surface.
• Newly skim-coated, patched, plastered, or very dry and porous ceilings should be primed before wallpapering. Porous surfaces can absorb moisture from the adhesive too quickly and reduce adhesion.
• The primer and adhesive must be suitable for the specific wallpaper material you are installing, and the primer must be compatible with the adhesive. Always follow the manufacturers’ recommendations for application and drying time.

Step 2: Check, Measure & Cut

Before you begin, inspect the wallpaper and make sure you have the correct design, color, quantity, and matching batch numbers. Check for any visible damage or defects before cutting or installing the wallpaper.

• Decide which direction you want the wallpaper to run across the ceiling.
• Use a laser level or chalk line to mark a straight guide across the ceiling. Do not assume that the adjoining wall is perfectly straight.
• Check the Specifications for your wallpaper width, pattern repeat, and pattern match before measuring and cutting.
• Cut the strips as indicated for your particular wallpaper and arrange them in hanging order.
• If the wallpaper has a pattern, allow for the pattern repeat when cutting each strip.

Step 3: Apply the Adhesive

• Use an adhesive recommended for the specific material of the wallpaper you are installing.
• For EasyUp and other paste-the-wall wallpapers, apply the adhesive directly to the ceiling.
• Use a roller to apply a thin, even layer of adhesive, making sure the entire surface is covered.
• Work with approximately one to two strip widths at a time so the adhesive does not begin to dry before the wallpaper is installed.

Step 4: Hang the First Strip

• Align the long edge of the first strip carefully with your guide line.
• We strongly recommend having one person position and smooth the wallpaper while the other supports the loose portion of the strip.
• Work gradually across the ceiling rather than trying to position the entire strip at once.
• Use a clean wallpaper smoothing tool to gently smooth the strip from the center outward and remove trapped air.
• Trim excess wallpaper at the edges with a sharp wallpaper knife.
• Remove any excess adhesive immediately with a clean, damp sponge or soft cloth. Do not scrub or soak the wallpaper.

Step 5: Continue with the Remaining Strips

• Hang each new strip edge to edge without overlapping.
• If your wallpaper has a pattern, carefully align the pattern with the previous strip.
• Do not stretch or force the wallpaper sideways to close a seam.
• Continue the same process—apply adhesive, position, smooth, trim, and clean—until the ceiling is complete.

Important: Ceiling Lights & Electrical Fixtures

If you are working around ceiling lights or other electrical fixtures, turn off the power at the breaker before beginning work around the fixture.

If you are unsure about removing or working around an electrical fixture, consult a qualified electrician.

Pro Tip: Get a Helping Hand

Wallpapering a ceiling is much easier with two people. One person can position and smooth the wallpaper while the other supports the remaining strip. This is especially important when working with longer strips.

Once finished, allow the wallpaper to dry naturally at normal room temperature. Avoid strong drafts or excessive heat while the adhesive is drying.

Wallpaper samples ship free via USPS from our showroom in Sarasota, Florida.

We offer free shipping on wallpaper roll orders over $150 within the United States. A flat $45 shipping fee applies to wallpaper roll orders of $150 or less. Wallpaper roll orders are shipped using UPS, FedEx, or DHL.

Estimated Delivery Times

Standard Wallpaper Rolls:
Most standard wallpaper orders have an estimated delivery time of 6–8 business days from order placement to delivery.

Ulricehamns Tapetfabrik – Select Designs:
Some designs are printed to order and have an estimated delivery time of 3–4 weeks. Any extended lead time is clearly noted on the individual product page.

Custom & Made-to-Measure Murals:
Customized and made-to-measure wallpaper murals have an estimated delivery time of 10–15 business days from order placement to delivery.

Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding applicable Swedish and U.S. public holidays.

International Shipping & Customs

Many of our wallpaper orders are shipped directly from our manufacturers in Sweden using UPS, FedEx, or DHL and must clear U.S. customs before delivery.

The delivery times listed above are estimates and are provided as a guide only. While most orders arrive within the estimated timeframe, occasional delays may occur due to customs processing, carrier delays, stock availability, holidays, or other circumstances outside our control.

Any applicable tariffs that we account for are included in the prices shown on our website.

Returns & Refunds

Standard wallpaper products purchased from Scandinavian Wallpaper may be returned within 45 days of delivery. We recommend ordering a sample before purchasing wallpaper rolls, as colors may appear differently on your screen than they do in person.

Return Requirements

To be eligible for a return:

• Wallpaper rolls must be unopened and in their original plastic wrapping.
• Returns must be shipped in appropriate packaging to prevent damage during transit.
• Customers are responsible for all return shipping costs.
• A 25% restocking fee applies to returned wallpaper rolls.
• Original shipping charges, if applicable, are non-refundable.
• Once we receive and inspect the returned wallpaper and confirm that it is in good, resalable condition, the applicable refund will be issued.
• Wallpaper samples are non-returnable.

Custom & Personalized Products

Products that are made to your specifications or otherwise customized or personalized are not eligible for return or refund.

This includes our custom-printed wallpaper murals, which are produced specifically for each customer based on the measurements, design specifications, and/or other selections provided and approved at the time of ordering.

We strongly recommend carefully reviewing all measurements, design previews, and specifications before approving a custom order. Once a custom order has been approved and submitted for production, it cannot be returned or refunded.

Damaged or Incorrect Items

If your order arrives damaged or you receive an incorrect item, please contact us as soon as possible at cs@scandinavianwallpaper.com and include your order number and photos of the product, packaging, and shipping label.

Damaged or incorrectly shipped items are handled separately from standard returns and are not subject to the 25% restocking fee when the issue is confirmed to be the responsibility of Scandinavian Wallpaper, the manufacturer, or the shipping carrier.

Please keep the product and all original packaging until we have reviewed your claim and provided further instructions.
